Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus)

Snapdragon Plant Features

Perk up your spring garden with a colorful assortment of snapdragon. For decades, this classic annual flower has brought delight to you and old alike. Appearing on tall spikes, the flowers can be gently squeezed to make them open like the mouth of a dragon. Snapdragons thrive in cool weather and come in both standard types that can grow to 3 feet tall and dwarfs that top out at 8 inches high. There are also trailing varieties that work perfectly for hanging baskets and window boxes. Snapdragon colors include yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, white, and bi-color. Some varieties are also delightfully fragrant and all types will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Snapdragons will bloom best during cool weather and will slow down once the weather heats up. Snapdragons are also deer resistant.

Snapdragon Growing Instructions

Plant snapdragon in a sunny spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day. Snapdragon prefers a moist, well-drained soil and will sulk during periods of drought so be sure to mulch the plants to maintain consistent soil moisture. When hot weather arrives most snapdragons will stop blooming. At that time you can replace them with heat-loving annuals or you can shear them back and wait for them to rebound in the fall. Older varieties of snapdragon may self sow the following spring.
