Sanchezia (Sanchezia nobilis)

Sanchezia Plant Features

Sanchezia is a beautiful flowering shrub that also has amazing foliage. Once only grown in the tropics, its beauty and easy-growing nature is making it an increasingly popular plant to grow in the north. Most of the year, sanchezia's main attraction is its colorful foliage; the dark green leaves are veined in white, cream, or gold. But in spring, summer, and fall, it bursts into bloom, producing eye-catching yellow flowers that appear from showy orange bracts.

Sanchezia is a relatively large shrub in the tropics -- it can grow 8 feet or more -- but is easy to keep in check. In the North, it usually doesn't grow much more than 3 or 4 feet in a season.

Sanchezia Growing Instructions

Grow sanchezia in shade or part shade. Bright dappled light -- such as under a canopy of a fine-textured tree -- helps bring out the best variegation in the foliage.

Water sanchezia regularly, and especially during hot, dry weather. This is especially important if you grow sanchezia in a container garden. Spreading a 2- to 3-inch-deep layer of mulch over the soil surface can help keep the soil cooler and moister longer -- so you have to water less.

Fertilize sanchezia once or twice a year, preferably in spring or early summer. You can fertilize it more frequently if you'd like to grow faster. Use any general purpose fertilizer and follow the package instructions.

Prune sanchezia any time of the year. When it's happy, it's a relatively fast-growing shrub; in containers, sanchezia typically grows much more slowly.

Sanchezia is not recommended for human or animal consumption.
