Raindrop Peperomia (Peperomia polybotrya)

Raindrop Peperomia Plant Features

A fabulous addition to any houseplant collection, raindrop peperomia (Peperomia polybotrya) is a fantastically easy to grow and fashionable selection discovered in Peru. It sports large (for a peperomia) heart- or teardrop-shaped leaves with a glossy sheen.

It's an ideal size for a bright desk or tabletop. Growing it in a bright spot is best for the plant, but also an excellent way to highlight its shiny leaves. It only grows about 10 to 12 inches tall.

Note: Raindrop Peperomia was discontinued from the Trending Tropicals collection in 2022.

Raindrop Peperomia Growing Instructions

Light
Raindrop peperomia appreciates a spot where it receives medium to bright light so it has a medium to strong shadow much of the day. Keep it away from direct afternoon sun through in hot climates, though. Too much light can cause unsightly sunburn.
Tip: Raindrop peperomia doesn't need natural light. It also enjoys artificial light, such as fluorescent or LED bulbs.

Water
Water raindrop peperomia some water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries. It is sensitive to overwatering. If you're in unsure about whether needs moisture, it's usually best to wait another day or two. Raindrop peperomia has relatively thick leaves, so it withstands drying out fairly well.

Humidity
Give your raindrop peperomia average relative humidity levels. It doesn't need the high humidity like many houseplants, but can suffer from crispy brown leaf edges in especially dry air. If you need to boost humidity, grow your plant in a group with other houseplants, place a small humidifier nearby, grow it over a pebble tray, or place it in a terrarium.

Fertilizing
Feed raindrop peperomia in spring and summer with a plant food formulated for use on houseplants. Follow the instructions on the product packaging for guidance on how much and how often to fertilize. Never apply more fertilizer than the instructions recommend.

Pruning
Pruning isn't needed except to remove old leaves as they fade. Note: Raindrop peperomia is grown for ornamental use.

While it is considered nontoxic, it is not intended for human or animal consumption.
