Earth Star (Cryptanthus spp.)

Earth Star Plant Features

Earth stars are unusual houseplants perfect for adding a dash of color and texture to your spaces. Small indoor plants, they're perfect for growing on bright tabletops -- and make excellent living centerpieces for special gatherings. Because they're easy to grow, earth stars are also ideal additions to your desk at work. They don't need constant nurturing, so you can enjoy their beauty without a lot of maintenance.

Most earth stars have variegated foliage, which makes them striking to look at, even without flowers. Punch up the color quotient by growing your earth star in a contrasting container; a pink-variegated selection, for example, becomes a showpiece in a lime-green pot.

Earth Star Growing Instructions

Grow earth stars in a bright spot. These small indoor plants can take some direct sun on their leaves, so they're perfect for dressing up an otherwise bland window sill. As a general rule, the brighter the light, the more colorful the plants are. If your earth stars seem pale, move them to a brighter spot and they should start to show more intense shades.

Water earth stars so the soil just dries before watering again. They don't seem to be particularly fussy, however and will thrive in moist soil. Likewise, if you forget to water your earth stars now and again, they don't mind.

These unusual houseplants like average to high humidity, making them fun choices for adding to terrariums because of their small size and interesting texture.

Earth stars don't require a lot of fertilizer. If you do wish to feed them, use a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer and follow the directions on the packaging. Try to feed them at least once a year (preferably in spring or summer, when they're actively growing).

These unusual houseplants are not intended for human or animal consumption.
